THE SCULPTURE
HEATHER is ½ scale and is finished in the old world tradition of fine detail, while exhibiting the superiority of modern technology. HEATHER is finished entirely by G.A. Crews. Work on the sculpture commenced in June of 1986. RTV rubber molds were created at the stage where work was to begin on each of the 2 bronzes of the edition; over 7,000 hours had been devoted to the piece at that time.
THE EDITION
Wax and ceramic mold work, as well as the actual bronze pouring of the original edition was performed by the sculptor at Eagle Art Works, St. Louis. (A special thanks to Del Zornada for technical assistance, RTV mold engineering and the use of his foundry equipment.) All bronze finishing, including patina, was by G.A.Crews, as well as all marble work with the exception of the "bull-nose round" at the very bottom of the base (by Paul Weis). HEATHER #1 consumed over 2,700 hours in the making.
An edition of 2 original bronzes plus the source piece will be the only production of HEATHER during the sculptor's life. There will be no #A1, A2, B1, B2, etc. There will be no foundry copy, proof copy, copywrite copy, artist's copy, mother of the artist's copy, or any other bogus excuse for an illegitimate copy of a limited edition. There will be no production of HEATHER in any alternate materials (ie: ceramic, plastic, plaster, etc.) The original edition is limited to 2 copies, although the sculptor may never finish the #2 copy.
THE SCULPTOR
Gregory A. Crews was born March 13, 1955, in St.Louis County, Missouri. He graduated from Parkway West in 1973. He studied architecture at Meramec Community College ('74-'75) and has produced the occasional watercolor painting from that time on. He received a B.S. in geology and geophysics from the University of Missouri at Rolla in 1978 and worked as a geologist 1979-1982 ('81-'82 in Australia). In January of 1983 he returned to UMR for graduate studies in petroleum geology; earning an M.S. degree in 1985. He created his first bronze sculpture in 1984.
The sculptor was a bronze contractor for Victor Delmo (Del) Zornada's Eagle Art Works foundry from 1986 to 2003 and alternately contracted as a consulting geologist as well. Mr. Zornada passed away in the Spring of 2003; God rest his soul. Eagle Art primarily produced investment grade re-creations of 19th and early 20th century art deco, nouveau and other fine bronze works. The sculptor performed most of the patina, plating and painting of this production. He was also responsible for much of the welding, finishing and engraving at Eagle Art. G.A.Crews has created numerous one-off original bronzes for private collections as well.
The sculptor is currently contracting geology/geophysics and catching up on entertainment and adventure.
