POST - HEATHER ADVENTURES / INTRODUCTION
After completing the #1 copy of HEATHER in 1999 it was time to do some out of state geology contracting, since local oil drilling had not picked up. The coal bed methane (CBM) business seemed to be booming out west and contract well logging for Century Geophysical was a doorway to the industry. In late 2000 a few months of work out of Enumclaw, Washington, had me mountain biking in the shadow of Mt. Rainier and rediscovering a world beyond work and then work some more.
CBM logging out of Gillette, Wyoming and Broadus, Montana, in 2001 had me taking up the Devils Tower challenge that had bitten me the first time I saw the Tower back in 1984. I just wanted to get on top.
Snowskiing had returned to my agenda but I became a full-time snowboarder in 2002. Getting 15-20 days of snowriding a year has become a standard. I have ideas in the works for a snowboard bronze after having whipped out a "climber's impression" bronze of the Tower.
The rise of oil prices in recent years tells me to get back to the search for the black gold. CBM has kept me answering the call of Wyoming for three quarters of each year through 2005. Climbing at the Tower is only an hour away and snowriding in the Bighorns is only 2 hours from Gillette. Most of my snowriding is with the Crews clan (at Winter Park) during the off-work season. But when the drill rigs shut down for a Spring rain, that usually means snow in the mountains. When the rigs stopped for a foot of snow (mid-May, 2005 after the resorts were closed) I was kick-stepping my way up Bighorn Mtn at Meadowlark Lake for 7 good runs in several feet of fresh pow; carving my own tracks and it was all mine.
Most of the following stories are knock-offs from emails (including attached video snaps) previously sent to friends or relatives some days following the event. Work hard and play harder G.A.CREWS
